CMM: Special issue on computational methods

CT&M’s journal Communication Methods and Measures invites submissions for a special issue on computational methods. Here is the full call for papers:

For this special issue, we invite submissions that further the understanding, development and application of computational methods in communication research. Computational methods include (but are not limited to) methods such as text analysis, topic modeling, social/semantic network analysis, online experiments, machine learning, and agent-based modeling and simulations. Computational Methods can be used to build theory about, quantify, analyze, and visualize communication structures and processes. Computational methods can be applied to “big data” and social media data, but can also be used to analyse historical archives (e.g. newspaper archives, proceedings) or to provide a more sophisticated understanding of “small data”.

In particular, we welcome submissions on:

  • Innovative ways to use computational methods for communication research;
  • Evaluation and validation of computational approaches to studying communication research;
  • Application of computational methods to answer substantive communication research questions;
  • Reflections on the role of computational methods in communication research and their link with theory;

The special issue may also include a “teacher’s corner” article with brief descriptions of useful software packages and tools for studying communication. Authors interested in this format are encouraged to contact special issue co-editor Wouter van Atteveldt prior to submission.

The deadline for submission for consideration is July 1, 2017. Submitters should include a statement in the cover letter that the manuscript is being submitted for the special issue on Computational Methods. Articles will be peer reviewed and a decision rendered within 60 days, with a target publication date of March 2018. Some highlights:

  • Celebrate CT&M’s 50th anniversary with us! Join us at the best-of-CT&M session from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. CT&M Lifetime Achievement award winner Jack McLeod will serve as discussant.
  • Jörg Matthes will serve as the next editor-in-chief of CMM. He is the current research chair of CT&M and current associate editor of CMM.
  • We are still waiting to hear the results of our bid for ISI listing. Please visit our business meeting (Sat. Aug. 8 @ 7 p.m.), immediately after the best-of-CT&M session, for the most recent news.
  • Our paper submissions increased from 79 papers in 2014 to 99 papers in 2015. There was a 50% acceptance rate in 2015, compared to 57% in 2014.
  • We will distribute awards for the top papers and Barrow Minority Scholarship award at the business meeting. Congrats to all of the winners!
  • There are two PF&R panels:

The measurement of how people are ‘exposed’ to media content, which is crucial for the understanding of media use and media effects, has been a challenge for a long time. On the one hand, today’s media landscape in which individuals are exposed to messages anytime, anywhere from a great variety of sources on an increasing number of different platforms has complicated the measurement of media exposure even more. On the other hand, the new digital media offer also new possibilities to map media exposure by means of passive measurement.


Our current thinking about exposure stems from a time with clearly demarcated media types, platforms, and limited choice. We propose that it is valuable to consider the term communication exposure as a heuristic for understanding, at a broader level, that exposure can entail exposure to different media, on different platforms, with different contents, in different combinations. As many of the distinctions between media blur, the concept of communication exposure may offer a more encompassing and comprehensive framework. This will have serious implications for our measurement of exposure.

In this special issue we invite submissions that deal with the conceptualization and measurement of exposure. These can be both theoretical and empirical in nature.

In the opening article, we identify recent developments in the way in which communication exposure is measured and we evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. We provide an overview of the development in published research in the major journals in the past decade drawing on media exposure measures. We also introduce a research tool for media exposure measurement and conclude with a research agenda for issues that need to be tackled in future research.

CMM Special Issue on “Questionable Research and Publication Practices in Communication Science”

Across the globe, scientific research communities are engaged in heated debates about scientific conduct and questionable research and publication practices (often referred to as the “sloppy science” debate). This debate centers on the prevalence of questionable scientific practices and on the extent to which such practices hinder scientific progress.

Although the debate originated in other research fields, it clearly is relevant to the practice of communication science. This special issue of Communication Method & Measures aims to spark a discussion about “sloppy science” in communication research – a critical reflection on our common research and reporting practices – with the goal of potentially improving our standards heading into the future.

“Evolution, Biology, and Brains – Methodological Innovations in Communication Science”

Communication science is a transdisciplinary enterprise. To be active contributors to this science, researchers need familiarity with a range of theoretical and methodological tools. These include expertise in the basic principles of evolutionary theory, biological measurement, neuroscientific, and a range of other state-of-the-art approaches to studying human behavior. With a few exceptions, just a few years ago these approaches were largely absent from the field. Today, however, a critical mass of scholars is now employing such methods to advance theory and application within communication.

Communication Methods and Measures, published by Taylor and Francis, is issuing a call for a special issue on biological approaches to the study of communication phenomena. One of the goals of this special issue is to showcase the research of scholars working across subareas of communication studies using evolutionary advances, behavioral genetics, neuroscience, or biological measurement (e.g., of the endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems) to address important questions in communication science. Manuscripts can be data driven or not but must emphasize a specific
methodology and its use over substantive findings. Manuscripts should not be focused primarily on testing specific hypotheses of a substantive nature. However, such hypothesis testing and associated substantive findings can be used as a means of illustrating the benefits of the particular method being emphasized. Ideally, articles published in this special issue will be pedagogical in tone and strive to educate communication scholars who may be interested in or could greatly benefit applying a particular biological approach to their research program. Contributions with a critical or cautious perspective regarding biological approaches are also welcome.

The deadline for submissions is January 31st, 2014. The submission should include a statement in the cover letter that the manuscript is to be considered for the special issue on “Evolution, Biology, and Brains – Methodological Innovations in Communication Science.” Articles will be peer reviewed and a decision rendered within 90 days, with a target publication date of March 2015. Aims & Scope

The aims of Communication Methods and Measures are to bring developments in methodology, both qualitative and quantitative, to the attention of communication scholars, to provide an outlet for discussion and dissemination of methodological tools and approaches to researchers across the field, to comment on practices with suggestions for improvement in both research design and analysis, and to introduce new methods of measurement useful to communication scientists or improvements on existing methods. Submissions focusing on methods for improving research design and theory testing using quantitative and/or qualitative approaches are encouraged. Articles devoted to epistemological issues of relevance to communication research methodologies are also appropriate. This journal welcomes well-written manuscripts on the use of methods as well as articles illustrating the advantages of newer or less widely known methods over those traditionally used in communication.
